Each November through early January, A local holiday lights event transforms the Jackson Square area into a luminous landscape, with decorated historic homes and museums offering evening illumination experiences. Lighting ceremonies often coincide with the first weekend of December, and the display remains active through mid-January. Visitors can join guided lantern walks led by costumed interpreters or explore at their own pace along sidewalks lined with seasonal music.
The lantern walks begin at the Telfair Academy and wind through the historic district, weaving stories of 19th-century holiday traditions, Civil War era celebrations, and local winter customs into the narrative of the route. Routes typically last 45 minutes, and small group sizes allow for personalized attention and photo opportunities at well-lit historic landmarks along the way.
Outdoor temperatures in Savannah during the holiday season can range from cool to mild, but evenings remain relatively comfortable. Seating is limited on the walking route, so comfortable footwear and a light jacket are advised.
