Once lined with wharves, warehouses, and ship-chandlery, it now features riverside parks, restored rail yards, and converted industrial spaces. Walking along the River Street Promenade offers views of oceangoing vessels and the rhythmic rise and fall of tides—a scene unchanged for centuries, even as cranes now share skyline space with historic brick warehouses.
The Central of Georgia Railway complex, anchored by its 1850s roundhouse, anchors this district as one of the oldest surviving antebellum rail facilities in the U.S. Its stone and timber structure still stands, a testament to how rail and river once converged to drive the city’s economy.
